They not only minister to individuals and groups but also train, encourage, and help others recognize and use the gifts that God has placed in them. Their heart’s desire is to share what they’ve learned over the years about God’s love and transforming power. Using her spiritual gifts and training, Lori ministers in the corporate setting in her home church as well as conducting individual prayer ministry sessions at The Harvest House with those who desire deeper emotional healing and freedom. Lori was ordained as a minister on April 5, 2013. Lori has studied and been trained in various levels of prayer ministry through today’s leading prayer ministers in healing prayer, inner/emotional healing prayer and deliverance. Learning, reading, listening and studying about the different facets of prayer have been a joy as well as a “stretching” in faith. So their journey has literally taken her home.ĭuring the past 12 years they have been on a spiritual journey as well. This property was literally Lori’s homestead as she grew up amidst the cornfields of rural Iowa. It has been a long and winding road but the Lord has led them to three acres of beauty, peace and rest in the heart of Iowa for The Harvest House to call home. The journey to find a location for a prayer ministry and retreat center began in 2009 for Lori and her husband Tim.
When that passion was combined with the desire for a place to gather with friends to pray and a private place to conduct prayer ministry, The Harvest House was born. Over this time, Harvest House has maintained its purpose of providing men addicted to drugs and alcohol with an opportunity to turn their lives around.The Harvest House director, Lori Zylstra, has a passion for prayer. What began as a small home for eight men on Belmont Avenue has grown to include a 24-bed main facility and an additional 4 re-entry houses. Men from all walks of life, including those with histories of relapse, criminal activity, and imprisonment, are welcomed into the program. In 2000, Harvest House moved to its current location on Ramsayville Road in the greenbelt of Ottawa South, where it continues to serve young men between the ages of 16 and 30 who struggle with addictions. Initially started as a wood-working shop in an adjacent farmhouse, the Skills Development program was formalized in 1992 and now includes activities such as salesmanship, meal preparation, carpentry, and administrative work. In 1985, Harvest House started the Re-Entry program, which was designed to provide graduates with housing and a continued support system. The distance from the city provided by this location removed a great part of the temptation that residents face to return to the street and their former ways of life.
In 1980, Harvest House moved to a more rural setting located on River Road, where the program was able to begin housing 24 residents. Many Harvest House graduates remain embedded in the community by volunteering and offering support to newer residents. This strong tradition of volunteering continues, with volunteers coming in to teach courses, contribute as board members, and assist with fundraising events. Harvest House began with only an Executive Director and two senior residents – all working on a volunteer basis. The first house was an 8-bed residence located on Belmont Avenue in Ottawa South. To rehabilitate young men who are chemically dependent, to instill in them self-discipline, and to reintegrate them into society by an inner change brought about by faith in Jesus Christ.
